The notability bar, in plain terms
Every article below lives or dies on the same test: Wikipedia’s General Notability Guideline (WP:GNG) — “significant coverage in multiple published secondary sources that are reliable, intellectually independent of each other, and independent of the subject.” Every word matters:
- Significant — real discussion, not a name-drop or a one-line credit.
- Multiple — one great article isn’t enough; need 2–3+ separate pieces.
- Secondary — journalism/criticism about the subject, not their own site, press kit, or LinkedIn.
- Reliable — established editorial outlets, not blogs, PR sites, or self-published pages.
- Independent — not the subject’s employer, studio, agent, or a paid placement.
- Independent of each other — three articles reprinting the same press release count as one source, not three.
For creative professionals (makeup artists, directors, writers), WP:CREATIVE offers an alternate path: notable if regarded as an important figure by peers, if they originated a significant technique, or if they created a significant/well-known work that itself received “multiple independent periodical articles or reviews.” This last part is why the two film articles below matter even beyond their own sake — a film with its own established notability can carry its director’s case too.
What does NOT count, regardless of how many of them pile up: IMDb, fan wikis (e.g. Memory Alpha), crowd-sourced bio aggregators (Prabook), directory/database listings (ZoomInfo, LinkedIn, platform bio pages), press-release wires (PRLog), the subject’s own company announcing its own awards, and “interview mill” sites where the subject supplies their own profile.
Submissions
- Crist Ballas (biography) — declined twice on notability grounds. Status: still short of GNG; real sourcing gap on his UMN/prosthetics work and several claimed Hollywood credits couldn’t be verified this round.
- Jeffrey Morris (biography) — moved to draft space, carries a disclosed COI notice, declined on notability. Status: strategy is to get his films independently notable first (see below), then revise this draft to lean on them.
- Parallel Man: Infinite Pursuit (film, new article) — not yet submitted. Status: reasonably solid, likely to pass, sourcing is broad (5 outlets) but clustered around one news event rather than sustained coverage.
- The Eagle Obsession (film, new article) — not yet submitted. Status: the strongest of the four — two genuine independent reviews plus an unaffiliated festival’s own finalist announcement.
